Patina Maldives, Fari Islands has welcomed Los Angeles-based designer, curator and vintage authority Sean Wotherspoon for an exclusive creative collaboration combining art, fashion and marine conservation.
Running from 12 August to 12 September 2026, the project brings Wotherspoon’s distinctive world of colour, texture and vintage design to the Maldives — with the surrounding reef at its heart.
Known for bridging archival influences with contemporary design, Wotherspoon co-founded Round Two at the age of 22 and has since worked across footwear, apparel and automotive design, with collaborations including Nike, adidas, Porsche, Pokémon and Gap. At Patina Maldives, his creative language takes on a distinctly island-inspired form.
Sean Wotherspoon Brings His Creative World to Patina Maldives
At the centre of the collaboration is the Fari Artist Atelier, transformed with an exclusive capsule collection featuring original artworks, apparel, accessories, vintage finds and reworked pieces.
Created specifically for Patina Maldives, the collection includes one-of-one vintage Hawaiian shirts and Carhartt shorts individually reworked with Wotherspoon’s artwork. Drawing inspiration from the colours, textures and energy of the Maldives, the pieces reflect his signature approach: taking familiar materials and objects and giving them an unexpected new perspective.
The Atelier also brings together original artworks, vintage ephemera and curated objects, offering guests a closer look at the ideas and influences behind Wotherspoon’s multidisciplinary practice.
‘Respect the Reef’: From Guest Artwork to the Indian Ocean
The collaboration extends far beyond fashion. Its centrepiece, Respect the Reef, began after Wotherspoon explored the reefs surrounding the Fari Islands with Patina Maldives’ resident marine biologist, Nihaan Ibrahim, learning about the resort’s conservation and coral restoration initiatives.
Those conversations inspired a large-scale ceramic fish sculpture created collectively with guests during the Fari Islands Festival, held from 13–15 August.
The project brought together two existing practices at Patina Maldives: ceramic coral workshops and underwater coral structures. Instead of using a conventional geometric frame, the team created a sculptural fish covered with individually made ceramic scales.
Wotherspoon also introduced colour to the process. While pieces created during Patina’s regular ceramic coral workshops are traditionally left unglazed, guests participating in Respect the Reef were invited to glaze individual scales with their own combinations of colour and pattern.
The completed sculpture has since been submerged in the lagoon surrounding Patina Maldives, where it is intended to become increasingly integrated with the marine environment as coral establishes itself around the structure.
Creativity That Continues Beneath the Surface
The project reflects an idea Wotherspoon developed during his time on the island: that everything ultimately comes back to the reef.
Without the reef, there’s no Patina, there’s no ocean life. So, my theme was ‘Respect the Reef’.
It is also what makes the collaboration particularly fitting for Patina Maldives. Since opening in 2021, the resort has incorporated artists, designers and cultural voices into its identity, while its Fari Artist Atelier provides a dedicated setting for creative exchange.
Here, however, the artwork does not remain inside a gallery. Guests contributed individual pieces, Wotherspoon brought them together through his unmistakable use of colour, and the finished work was ultimately returned to the environment that inspired it. As the reef develops around the sculpture, Respect the Reef is designed to continue changing long after the collaboration itself ends.
