British fashion designer Matthew Williamson will bring his signature use of colour and pattern to Finolhu, a Seaside Collection Resort, with an exclusive artist residency taking place from 21 to 31 October 2026.

As part of the resort’s acclaimed Art & Design Programme, guests will have the opportunity to participate in immersive workshops led by one of the UK’s most recognisable creative talents.

Known for combining luxury hospitality with contemporary design and artistic experiences, Finolhu continues to position itself as one of the Maldives’ leading lifestyle resorts, offering guests meaningful opportunities to engage with internationally renowned creatives.

Matthew Williamson Brings His Creative Vision to the Maldives

Matthew Williamson first gained international recognition with his debut collection at London Fashion Week in 1997, becoming celebrated for his bold prints, vibrant palettes and distinctive maximalist aesthetic. Over the past two decades, his creative work has expanded beyond fashion into interior design, homeware and lifestyle collections, earning him a reputation as one of Britain’s most influential designers.

During his residency at Finolhu, Williamson will lead a series of intimate painting workshops inspired by one of his most recognisable motifs—the palm tree. Drawing on the colours and natural beauty of the Maldives, guests will explore abstract painting techniques that encourage creativity, self-expression and experimentation.

Each participant will create their own artwork while learning directly from Williamson in a relaxed island setting.

A Growing Art & Design Programme at Finolhu

Williamson joins an impressive list of creatives who have visited Finolhu throughout 2026 as part of the resort’s ongoing Art & Design Programme.

Earlier residencies have featured:

  • British artist and designer Sophie Tea
  • Fashion illustrator Megan Hess
  • Interior designer and television personality Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen
  • Multidisciplinary artist Natasha Kumar

Through exhibitions, workshops and interactive experiences, the programme gives guests direct access to internationally recognised artists while reinforcing Finolhu’s reputation as one of the Maldives’ most creative luxury resorts.

The Art Lab: Finolhu’s Creative Hub

At the centre of the programme is The Art Lab, Finolhu’s distinctive barnacle-inspired creative space dedicated to artistic expression and cultural exchange.

Throughout the year, the venue hosts exhibitions, artist residencies and hands-on workshops designed to inspire guests of all ages. Rather than simply observing art, visitors are encouraged to take part in the creative process alongside established designers and artists from around the world.

The Matthew Williamson residency continues this philosophy by offering guests a rare opportunity to learn directly from an internationally acclaimed designer in an intimate island environment.
