First-hand stays. Expert perspective.

Few hospitality names need as little introduction as Four Seasons. In the Maldives, however, the brand has created not one but three very different interpretations of island life: Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa, Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, and the seven-bedroom Four Seasons Private Island Maldives at Voavah.

Together, they cover remarkably different ways of experiencing the destination – from an intimate resort close to Malé to the exclusivity of an entire private island.

Sitting somewhere in the golden middle is Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru.

Opened in November 2006, Landaa is a well-established resort that has had time to grow into itself. Set on a former coconut plantation with much of its original vegetation preserved, it feels mature, spacious and genuinely tropical.

But what makes Landaa particularly interesting isn’t simply what is found on the island. It is where the island is found.

A Destination Within the Destination

Landaa Giraavaru sits in Baa Atoll, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2011 and one of the Maldives’ most important marine environments.

The reserve encompasses coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangroves and supports extraordinary biodiversity. Its most famous natural phenomenon occurs at Hanifaru Bay, where the interaction of tides and currents can concentrate enormous quantities of plankton, attracting some of the world’s largest gatherings of manta rays.

For guests at Landaa, this isn’t simply an interesting fact about the surrounding atoll. It can become one of the defining experiences of the stay.

Manta-on-Call

During manta season, guests can register for the resort’s Manta-on-Call programme. Sightings cannot, of course, be scheduled. Instead, when mantas are spotted, registered guests who are available at the time are contacted and can head out by speedboat with the resort’s marine experts to snorkel alongside them.

The programme operates during manta season, typically from May to December, with Four Seasons and its marine conservation partners drawing on years of research into manta movements and environmental conditions.

SEANSES TIP

If Manta-on-Call is high on your list, check the predicted key viewing dates before confirming your trip. And once you’re at Landaa, stop by the resort boutique beside the dive centre and rent a GoPro. This is one experience you’ll want to bring home with you.

The relationship with the ocean goes considerably deeper than manta encounters. Landaa’s Marine Discovery Centre is also home to a sea turtle rehabilitation programme, where rescued turtles are cared for before, whenever possible, being returned to the ocean.

During our visit, one detail made the scale of that work particularly tangible: a wall documenting the turtles the team has rescued and rehabilitated over the years. It turns something that could easily feel like another resort conservation initiative into a visible record of individual animals and years of hands-on work.

Together with the resort’s manta research, coral conservation and wider marine programmes, it gives Landaa’s relationship with Baa Atoll a sense of purpose beyond simply providing access to beautiful dive and snorkelling sites.

For us, that adds another dimension to the resort: marine life isn’t treated as an excursion away from Landaa. It is part of its identity.

Getting There, the Four Seasons Way

Landaa is reached by seaplane from Velana International Airport, with a direct journey taking approximately 35–40 minutes.

And this is where Four Seasons offers an interesting distinction.

Alongside regular seaplane transfers, Landaa has its own marine-inspired aircraft: the eight-seat Flying Triggerfish and 10-seat Flying Boxfish.

Subject to availability and international flight timings, the Four Seasons aircraft may also be arranged on a shared basis for an additional charge. For guests who value the arrival experience, we think it is an option worth asking about.

There is also another way to approach Landaa: don’t experience it alone.

A combination of Four Seasons Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru works particularly well for travellers who want to see two sides of the Maldives within one trip. Rather than choosing between the two resorts, a split stay can turn the journey itself into part of the experience.

Life on Landaa

Landaa is a generously sized island, but it rarely feels inconveniently large.

Bicycles are provided with the villas, and before long, cycling beneath the palms becomes part of the daily rhythm — breakfast in one direction, the beach in another, perhaps AyurMa later in the afternoon.

The scale also allows the island to offer noticeably different settings.

One detail worth understanding before booking is that the two sides of Landaa don’t offer exactly the same experience.

Life on Landaa
experience opens towards the ocean

On one side, sea defences provide greater protection from the movement of the open ocean. Villas here can represent a more accessible entry into certain accommodation categories, and the calmer, more protected setting may appeal to some guests.

On the other side, the experience opens towards the ocean, with unobstructed views and a different sense of connection to the horizon. These villas generally command a premium.

Neither choice is universally better. It depends on what matters most to you – which is precisely why we think villa selection at Landaa deserves more consideration than simply choosing “beach” or “water.”

Where Would We Stay?

Landaa offers both beach and overwater accommodation, ranging from one-bedroom villas to substantial two- and three-bedroom options and the four-bedroom Landaa Estate.

Rather than working through every category, there are two things we think prospective guests should know.

First, Landaa has evolved over time. Villas have been refreshed in different phases, so guests who particularly value the most recently updated interiors should consider this when selecting their accommodation.

Speak to our Travel Advisors about the individual villa categories and recent enhancements. At a resort with this many accommodation options, choosing the right villa – and the right part of the island – can make a meaningful difference to the stay.

Family Beach Villa

Second, families shouldn’t overlook the Family Beach Villa simply because it is technically a one-bedroom category.

Its additional study has its own bathroom and can function very comfortably as a separate sleeping space. Depending on the configuration, it can accommodate up to four adults or several combinations of adults and children, making it a particularly clever option for families who want more usable space without necessarily stepping into a conventional two-bedroom villa.

It is exactly the kind of detail that isn’t obvious when comparing villas by bedroom count alone.

Dinner Starts Before Dinner

Landaa has enough variety in its restaurants and bars to keep a longer stay interesting, but rather than list every dining option, we’d rather tell you about the evening we would repeat.

It began at Blu before dinner.

Come early enough and the setting does much of the work: sand underfoot, the horizon ahead and the colours changing as the sun disappears over the water.

From there, our evening moved into a lobster dinner at Blu – one of those experiences where the setting and the meal feel inseparable.

It was our dining highlight at Landaa, and our recommendation is simple: don’t arrive just in time for your reservation. Come for sunset and let dinner follow.

AyurMa

AyurMa Is More Than a Spa

One of the biggest surprises of our stay was the scale and philosophy of AyurMa, Landaa’s wellbeing centre. Calling it simply a spa doesn’t quite explain it.

AyurMa is built around four pillars – Ayurveda, Yoga Therapy, Wellness and Planetary Wellbeing – with a team that includes Ayurvedic doctors, naturopathic physicians and yoga therapists. Guests are offered an initial AyurMa consultation, while more comprehensive assessments and programmes can take the experience considerably further.

The introductory consultation is particularly worthwhile. Rather than beginning with the question of which massage you would like, it looks at your individual wellbeing and can lead to recommendations around lifestyle, diet and practices that extend beyond the holiday itself.

That distinction matters.

A good resort spa helps you switch off for an afternoon. AyurMa encourages you to think about what you might take back into everyday life.

The setting reinforces that separation. Treatment spaces extend both over the water and into the island’s tropical interior, and even Wi-Fi gives way as you move deeper into the experience. For once, being unreachable feels entirely appropriate.

For guests who genuinely prioritise wellbeing when they travel, we would allow more than a single treatment here. AyurMa deserves time.

A Different Kind of Family Holiday

Landaa also makes a compelling case for visiting the Maldives during the summer months.

In 2026, Four Seasons introduced Learn with Legends, a summer programme across Landaa Giraavaru and Kuda Huraa that brought families together with leading names from sport, adventure and conservation for coaching, workshops and island experiences.

The concept will return from 5 July to 29 August 2027, with the next line-up still to be announced.

For families travelling during the school holidays, this creates a rather different proposition from the traditional kids’ club model. Children — and in many cases parents too — can spend part of their Maldives holiday learning from people at the highest levels of their respective fields.

During our own visit, the regular kids’ club was operating from temporary accommodation and wasn’t available in its full usual format, so we wouldn’t judge that aspect of the resort based on what we experienced. What was much clearer was the broader strength of Landaa for families: flexible villa layouts, space to explore, marine experiences, bicycles and programming that can make the destination as engaging for younger travellers as it is relaxing for their parents.

Who Do We See at Landaa?

Perhaps Landaa’s greatest strength is that it doesn’t rely on a single reason to visit. We can see it working particularly well for families who want more than a beach holiday, especially those making use of the flexible family villas and seasonal programming.

For couples, there is enough privacy, dining and wellbeing to build an entirely different kind of stay around the same island.

For divers and ocean lovers, Baa Atoll is a reason in itself to look closely at Landaa — and during manta season, that reason becomes considerably stronger.

And for wellness-focused travellers, AyurMa has enough substance to become a central part of the trip rather than something fitted into an otherwise conventional resort stay.

Our In House Perspective

After staying at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru, what stood out to us wasn’t one spectacular villa, one dinner or even one manta encounter.

It was balance.

Landaa is established without feeling stuck in time. It is large enough to offer genuine variety, yet cycling around the island quickly makes it feel familiar. It works for families without defining itself solely as a family resort. And while its Baa Atoll location delivers some extraordinary natural experiences, there is enough happening on land that the ocean doesn’t have to carry the entire stay.

Most importantly, there are decisions here that are worth getting right: which side of the island, which villa generation and configuration, whether to combine Landaa with Kuda Huraa, when to travel for mantas, and whether the Four Seasons seaplane makes sense for your arrival.

Those are the details that can turn a good stay into the right stay.

And that, ultimately, is what SEANSES In House is about: not simply telling you what a resort has, but sharing what we learned by actually being there.
