A Haven for Endangered Sea Turtles

Nestled within the pristine waters of the Indian Ocean, North Island in Seychelles stands as a beacon of conservation for endangered sea turtles. This remote paradise provides vital nesting and foraging grounds for hawksbill turtles and green turtles, two species that have long faced the threat of extinction.

Through dedicated conservation efforts, North Island has become a crucial sanctuary for these marine giants, safeguarding their future for generations to come.

For centuries, sea turtles were heavily exploited in Seychelles for their shells and meat, leading to a drastic decline in their populations.

Hawksbill turtles were particularly sought after for their intricately patterned shells, used to craft luxury items, while green turtles were prized for their calipee, a key ingredient in turtle soup.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Seychelles implemented stringent conservation measures in 1977, banning the international tortoiseshell trade under CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species). Since then, the country’s conservation efforts have led to a remarkable resurgence in sea turtle populations, with North Island playing a pivotal role in this success story.

North Island’s Commitment to Sea Turtle Conservation

North Island has upheld standardized sea turtle monitoring since 1998, making it one of Seychelles’ most significant conservation sites.

Under the guidance of leading marine biologist Dr. Jeanne Mortimer, the island established a long-term turtle monitoring program, ensuring that each nesting season contributes valuable data to global conservation efforts.

Key Conservation Actions on North Island:

  • Daily Beach Patrols: The island’s 1.4-kilometer coastline is patrolled at dawn, dusk, and night to monitor turtle activity.
  • Nesting Site Protection: Turtle tracks are meticulously measured, and nests are discreetly marked to prevent disturbance.
  • Tagging Program: Female turtles are tagged with unique titanium markers, allowing researchers to track their nesting patterns and migration routes.
  • Nest Relocation: Due to rising tides and shifting sands, over 37% of nests were translocated in 2024 to protect hatchlings from being washed away.

The success of North Island’s conservation program is evident in the increasing number of nesting turtles. In 2019, North Island recorded the highest number of nesting green turtles in Seychelles’ inner islands, with a 29-fold increase in their population since monitoring began. Hawksbill turtle nesting has also surged sixfold since 1998, a testament to the island’s unwavering commitment to conservation.

The latest data further highlights this trend:

  • 106 nests already documented as of February 2025, a remarkable rise from just 30 nests in the same period last year
  • 477 nests recorded in 2023
  • 407 nests recorded in 2024

Despite these successes, climate change and habitat loss continue to pose challenges to sea turtle conservation.

Rising sea levels threaten nesting sites, while ocean pollution and human activities remain significant risks.

However, through continued research, conservation initiatives, and community awareness programs, North Island remains steadfast in its mission to protect these magnificent creatures.
