First-hand stays. Expert perspective.

Some Maldivian islands are made for complete seclusion. Others are all about adventure, family time or romantic escapes. InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort manages to bring all these experiences together, creating a destination where every guest can find their own version of paradise.

The island’s personality reveals itself from the moment you arrive. A warm welcome accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional Maldivian drums immediately sets the mood. There is a wonderful sense of energy here, reflected in the resort’s distinctive architecture, inviting social spaces and the variety of experiences waiting to be discovered.

During our recent visit, the SEANSES team found plenty to appreciate, from the beautiful beaches and thoughtfully designed villas to the exceptional Club InterContinental benefits. But what impressed us most was how naturally the resort caters to different travellers, making it just as appealing for couples as it is for families and groups of friends.

One Island, Many Ways to Enjoy It

One of the first things we noticed about InterContinental Maldives was the variety of spaces available across the island. Despite offering so many different experiences, the resort never feels as though it is trying to fit everyone into the same holiday.

The adults-only Retreat is a wonderful example. With its infinity pool, comfortable loungers and ocean views, it offers a peaceful atmosphere for guests who prefer a slower pace. Elsewhere, family-friendly pools and recreational areas create opportunities for shared moments and a livelier island experience.

This balance is particularly valuable when travelling with children or as part of a multigenerational group. Parents can enjoy a quiet afternoon while younger guests take part in supervised activities, and everyone can reunite later for dinner or a sunset stroll.

It is this freedom to choose that makes InterContinental Maldives such an appealing destination. The resort feels welcoming and vibrant without sacrificing the privacy that makes a Maldivian holiday so special.

Club InterContinental: Little Luxuries That Add Up

For us, one of the resort’s greatest strengths is the Club InterContinental experience. While club privileges are often reserved for selected accommodation categories at other luxury hotels, at InterContinental Maldives they are an integral part of the island’s hospitality concept, extending across the villa collection.

And these are not simply extras that look attractive on paper. They are thoughtful additions that make a noticeable difference to the quality and value of a stay.

The experience begins before guests even reach the island, with a private Mercedes transfer to and from the seaplane terminal, along with access to the seaplane terminal lounge.

Once at the resort, daily rituals become part of the holiday. Complimentary breakfast from 7:00 am to 11:00 am, afternoon tea and cakes from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and evening aperitifs from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm create an enjoyable rhythm without requiring guests to plan every moment.

Our personal favourite was the afternoon tea. There is something especially lovely about taking a break in the middle of a tropical afternoon to enjoy tea and sweet treats. For parents travelling with children, it becomes even more appealing when the little ones are happily occupied at Planet Trekkers kids’ club.

SEANSES TIP

Make time for the complimentary afternoon tea, one of our favourite experiences at the resort. For families, it can be a lovely opportunity for parents to enjoy a peaceful break while children discover the activities at Planet Trekkers.

Dining is another highlight. The resort’s Dine Around concept includes daily dinner at participating restaurants, allowing guests to explore Café Umi, Fish Market and The Lighthouse according to their operating schedules.

The benefits extend to experiences that make a stay even more memorable. Guests staying three nights or longer can enjoy a complimentary floating breakfast in their villa’s private pool, while stays of four nights or more include a complimentary 60-minute full-body massage for two at AVI Spa, to be enjoyed within the first 48 hours of arrival.

There are also lovely personal touches, including a bottle of champagne or non-alcoholic sparkling wine upon arrival and a complimentary 30-minute resort photoshoot with one printed photograph. Additional digital images and photography packages are available at an extra charge.

SEANSES TIP

When planning your stay, consider the benefits associated with different lengths of stay. Three nights unlock a floating breakfast, while four nights include a massage for two. Remember to schedule the spa treatment within the first 48 hours of arrival.

complimentary non-motorised water sports

For guests who enjoy an active holiday, complimentary non-motorised water sports, snorkelling equipment, daily group yoga and stretching sessions, access to the football court and use of the fitness centre provide plenty of opportunities to explore and stay active.

Even the smaller details contribute to the experience: dedicated bicycles personalised with guests’ initials, BYREDO bathroom amenities, butler and 24-hour e-Butler service, and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the resort.

What we particularly appreciate is how these inclusions create a sense of generosity and ease. Rather than constantly considering which experiences to add, guests can simply enjoy more of what the island has to offer.

From the SEANSES perspective, these benefits are among the resort’s strongest advantages, bringing exceptional value to the overall stay while making the experience feel effortless and thoughtfully considered.

A Villa for Every Kind of Escape

Choosing the right villa is an important part of any Maldivian holiday, and InterContinental Maldives offers an impressive variety of accommodation styles, locations and layouts.

Beach Pool Villas are ideal for those who love being surrounded by tropical greenery with the beach just steps away. Overwater Pool Villas offer the quintessential Maldivian experience, with private pools, open ocean views and direct access to the water.

One of the more distinctive options is the Lagoon Pool Villa. Designed across two levels, these villas feature an elevated master bedroom, separate living space, private plunge pool and direct access to the lagoon. Their unusual layout gives them a character of their own, particularly appealing for guests who appreciate contemporary architecture and generous indoor-outdoor living.

For sunset lovers, it is worth paying attention to the villa names. Categories featuring “Sunset” in their names are positioned to offer direct sunset views from the accommodation. Watching the sky change colour from your own private pool is certainly one of the pleasures worth planning for.

SEANSES TIP

If watching the sunset from your private villa is important, look for accommodation categories featuring “Sunset” in their names. Villa orientation makes a real difference, so it is worth choosing your category carefully.

two- and three-bedroom residences

Families and larger groups have even more possibilities, with two- and three-bedroom residences in different locations across the resort. These residences combine expansive living spaces with multiple bedrooms and private pools, making them particularly practical for travelling together.

From the SEANSES perspective, larger residences can sometimes offer better overall value than reserving several separate villas, depending on the group size and travel dates. It is always worth comparing the options rather than assuming individual villas will be the most suitable choice.

SEANSES TIP

Before booking several separate villas, explore the two- and three-bedroom residences. For families and groups, they can offer more shared space, greater convenience and sometimes better overall value.

Architecture with Personality: From The Lighthouse to the Sunset Bar

InterContinental Maldives has a distinctive architectural identity, and its restaurants are among the best places to appreciate it.

The Lighthouse is impossible to overlook. Rising above the island, this striking structure houses a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant where guests can enjoy dinner accompanied by sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. It is both a dining destination and one of the resort’s most memorable architectural landmarks.

Equally interesting is the Sunset Bar, whose design takes inspiration from the traditional Maldivian dhoni boat. Its elegant curves, inviting atmosphere and wine cellar give the space a personality of its own, making it a wonderful setting for a pre-dinner drink.

Beyond these signature venues, Fish Market brings a lively seafood-focused dining experience, while Café Umi provides a relaxed setting for breakfast and all-day dining.

What we particularly enjoyed was that each venue feels different. Moving between them throughout a stay adds variety, not only through the cuisine but also through the atmosphere and design.

Manta Rays

Beyond the Beach: Manta Rays, Nurse Sharks and Ocean Adventures

The beaches of InterContinental Maldives are undoubtedly beautiful, but some of the island’s most extraordinary experiences take place beneath the surface.

The resort enjoys a special location in Raa Atoll, close to an important feeding ground for juvenile manta rays. Since 2019, InterContinental Maldives has collaborated with the Manta Trust, supporting research, conservation and education initiatives focused on these remarkable marine creatures.

The surrounding Maamunagau Lagoon is particularly significant between December and April, when juvenile manta rays gather to feed. Guests have opportunities to learn about these animals through educational presentations and responsibly managed marine excursions, gaining a deeper appreciation of the ocean beyond the usual snorkelling experience.

SEANSES TIP

December to April is an especially interesting period for guests hoping to encounter juvenile manta rays near Maamunagau Lagoon. Sightings depend on natural conditions, so we recommend planning your excursions with the resort’s marine team.

For those seeking a different kind of underwater adventure, the resort also offers guided snorkelling excursions to swim with nurse sharks. These encounters take place in nearby waters where guests can observe the sharks in their natural habitat under professional guidance.

Other experiences include house reef snorkelling, dolphin cruises, diving, sandbank escapes and private yacht adventures. With so much available, it is easy to alternate between active days exploring the ocean and quieter afternoons on the island.

What makes these experiences especially meaningful is the opportunity to combine adventure with learning. Through the Manta Trust collaboration, guests can discover why protecting the marine environment is so important, making their time in the Maldives memorable for reasons beyond its beautiful scenery.

Cinema Under the Stars

From Overwater Wellness to Stargazing Under the Maldivian Sky

Not every memorable moment at InterContinental Maldives needs to be adventurous. The resort offers plenty of opportunities to slow down, reconnect and enjoy the surroundings at a gentler pace.

AVI Spa, positioned over the water, is one of the island’s most peaceful retreats. Its treatment spaces provide a beautiful setting for relaxation, while complimentary group yoga and stretching sessions offer another way to begin or end the day.

Families are equally well catered for. Planet Trekkers kids’ club introduces younger guests to a programme of engaging activities, giving children their own sense of discovery while parents enjoy some well-deserved personal time.

And now, there is another reason to look beyond the horizon.

The resort has introduced a new stargazing experience, Under a Blanket of Stars, running from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027. It invites guests to discover another side of the Maldives after dark, when the sky becomes part of the island experience.

It is a lovely addition to the resort’s collection of activities, especially for travellers looking for something different from the traditional beach holiday.

An Island That Knows How to Celebrate

InterContinental Maldives also has a wonderfully celebratory side. Throughout the year, the resort brings special events, entertainment and creative collaborations to the island, adding fresh experiences for returning guests and first-time visitors alike.

The upcoming festive season, titled Twelve Pearls of the Ocean, promises to showcase this vibrant spirit through a programme inspired by the beauty and biodiversity of the Maldives.

Alongside festive dining and seasonal celebrations, the programme introduces opportunities to engage with the marine environment, including manta excursions, nurse shark encounters and coral conservation activities.

For travellers who enjoy the atmosphere of a lively island celebration, while still appreciating the privacy of their own villa, these events offer an additional reason to visit.
